Set up

  1. 01Set up the chest press machine so you can move without reaching or shifting to find position.
  2. 02Stack the joints around the pectoralis major target and brace before the first repetition.
  3. 03Start with a load and range that you can repeat without compensating.

Execute

  1. 01Move through a controlled range while keeping the pectoralis major as the main target.
  2. 02Pause briefly at the strongest position instead of bouncing through it.
  3. 03Return to the start with the same control you used to begin.

Coach cues

  1. 01Stay stacked.
  2. 02Move with intent.
  3. 03Control the return.
  4. 04Stop one clean rep before form breaks.

Common mistakes

  1. 01Adding load before owning the range.
  2. 02Using momentum to finish a repetition.
  3. 03Letting posture change as fatigue rises.
  4. 04Rushing the eccentric phase.

Breathing

Inhale before the lowering phase; exhale as you press or bring the hands together.

Tempo

Use a controlled 2–3 second lowering phase and keep the working range honest.

Safety check

Stop if shoulder position or control changes. Use a load that allows a repeatable range.

Make it easier

Reduce load, shorten the range slightly, or choose a supported variation.

Make it harder

Add a pause, a slower eccentric, or a small amount of load only after every repetition is consistent.
